SOPHIE & BRETT

DERRINALLUM, WESTERN VICTORIA

THE PROPOSAL
Brett’s surprise holiday proposal was almost foiled by fancy footwear, but, in the end, passion won out over fashion.
“We were in Byron Bay and, being a surfer, Brett wanted to walk along the beach because apparently the surf was ‘pumping,” Sophie explains.
“I didn’t want to because I had nice shoes on! But he eventually tricked me onto the beach where he had made a heart out of driftwood with a bottle of beautiful champagne sitting in the sand with two glasses awaiting us.
“He thought I saw the heart so baulked and dropped to one knee before we made it there. He had a not-so-stunning $2 black wooden ring with a purple hibiscus on it, and he said, ‘Sophie Louise, will you marry me?’ Of course I said ‘yes!’”

THE FESTIVAL WEDDING
It was the ultimate wedding day mash-up. Influenced by childhood memories of life on the land and a taste for the exotic, Sophie and Brett’s stunningly eclectic nuptials wowed family and friends alike.
The couple tied the knot at Sophie’s family farm, Maroko, at Derrinallum in Western Victoria, and celebrated in a dreamy tipi raised on the farm paddock.
“We decided to have the ceremony and reception at the same place as we didn’t want to miss out on anything,” Sophie explains.

TIPI STYLE
The tipi was decorated with masses of gum leaves hanging from the ceiling and opened onto the dance floor.
“We got to have our first dance together under the stars. There wasn’t a moment the dance floor was empty; everyone was on a tipi high,” Sophie says.
Ensuring their wedding day reflected their personalities was a must for the traditional Chinese medicine practitioner and her physiotherapist sweetheart.
“Both of us grew up on farms and have great childhood memories of the land. We are outdoorsy people so, for us, it just made sense to be amongst nature on our special day,” Sophie tells.

THAT DRESS
Sophie’s dress was from The Bridal Atelier’s Rue de Seine collection and epitomized effortlessly romantic style.
“I loved the boho, yet classy, elegance of it, with the sexiness of the sheer lace below the knee. The girls at Bridal Atelier were fantastic and I tell everyone that doesn’t want a pavlova dress to go there now,” she enthuses.

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS
Sophie’s bouquet featured seasonal blooms that hung softly in keeping with the folds of her gown.
About 160 guests attended the wedding and were treated to Pimms, champagne, beer and a standing entrée in the garden.
“My girlfriend, Annie, who sang at Tamworth this year, sang some beautiful, mellow country songs for us,” Sophie recalls.
“We had our daughter, Poppy, with us as flower girl; that really made the ceremony extra-special.”
